Homer's odyssey must have begun in desperate circumstances. The collar he was wearing had a rusted buckle. So it would appear that he'd spent a great deal of time outside in the elements....perhaps on the end of a chain. He was found New Years Eve, exhausted and hungry near some outbuildings on a hunt club in lower Richland County. He was dehydrated and close to death from starvation. You could count each rib. He seemed so tired and defeated. When he saw the open door of the pick-up truck, he crawled in to curl up and sleep, obviously thankful for a warm and protected place. We thought at first that he was an older dog, he moved like an old dog. But he would wag his tail when you talked to him. Though severely malnourished, he politely waited for food to be offered. He is so gentle when he takes the offered dog biscuit from your hand. To our surprise, the vet says he is actually a young dog, perhaps 1-2 years old. He is heart-worm negative and free of parasites. He was neutered on 01/06/2011, microchipped, and vaccinated. He still needs to put on some pounds and build his strength back up. He rides well in the car, puts himself to bed in his crate and seems to be people oriented. He has shown no aggression towards other dogs and seems a truly gentle soul. But because we are unsure of his background, we feel it would be wisest to place him in a home with no other dogs, cats or small children. A home visit will be required prior to placing him.
